Having trained in art, Carol turned to wood sculpture fifteen plus years ago. Studying under three well-known masters, she has her own unique style of deep relief where the subject stands out vividly from the background. Influenced by the Japanese Ikebana style of floral design, her designs have an elegant, graceful appearance. Each piece Carol creates is unique because each piece of wood yields a different grain pattern as it is carved away. Each design changes to follow the flow of the grain levels. In addition to signature floral carvings, Carol has carved pieces ranging from an intricate four-inch miniature reproduction of classical acanthus from historical architecture to pair of eight-foot high three-inch thick mahogany doors. Carved inside and out, these doors depict a Torrey Pine blowing in the wind. With extensive experience in architectural carving for furniture and cabinetry in fine homes and kitchens, Carol works with many designers and cabinet shops; locally and nationally. The refrigerator/freezer doors on display at the Design in Wood Show were featured on HGTV, Our Place, in the spring of 2003. The design on each panel interplays with the other for visual effect. The doors are alder with a finish of oil, walnut husk stain, gilsonite and wax. The large mouth bass sculpture, from a solid piece of butternut, reflects memories of summers spent on Chesapeake Bay. In that region this bass is called Rock Fish. Carol is a member of SDFWA, California Carver’s Guild, National Carving Association, San Diego County Carvers Guild, Spanish Village Art Center and the American Craft Council. Throughout her career, Carol has received recognition for her work, including a number of First Place awards from the Design in Wood Show. |
